ED RUMMEL MEMORIAL GRANT AWARD
Congratulations on being selected as the winner of the 2020 Sgt. Ed Rummel Memorial Grant Award.
This award allows one annual recipient to receive a FEMA AFGP fire or EMS equipment application each year. The application is professionally prepared and submitted at no cost to the recipient.
WHO WAS SGT. ED RUMMEL?
Ed was a NYPD Sergeant with 25 years of service, an Ex-Chief and Commissioner of the Mineola Volunteer Ambulance Corps., and an Ex-Captain of the Albertson Fire Company. Ed was a long-time NYS EMT and A-EMT. Ed held an Associate Degree from SUNY in Fire Service Administration.
Ed was a first responder during the recovery of the WTC on 9-11 and was among the first on scene to the Merillon Ave. LIRR mass shooting; among thousands of other responses. Ed was most recently recognized by the Port Washington Police Dept. for his work in solving a vehicular homicide case where the operator fled the scene into NYC and was apprehended through Ed’s investigation through his assignment with the Queens South Auto-Larceny Unit.
For reasons we will never fully know, Ed took his own life on New Year’s night in 2015. His good friends at Grant-Guys Inc. established this memorial grant application as a way to honor his service and memory. Ed was always helping small departments with surplus equipment, ordering extra supplies or including smaller agencies in important meetings and operations.
